Data released by the Japan Automobile Sales Association Federation and the Japan National Light Automobile Association Federation on the 6th showed that Japan’s domestic new car sales in 2024 were 4,421,494 units, down about 7.5% from 2023.
Data showed that in 2024, the sales of light vehicles with a displacement of less than 660 ml were 1,557,868 units, down about 10.7% from the previous year; the total sales of other types of vehicles with a displacement of more than 660 ml were 2,863,626 units, down about 5.6% from the previous year.
According to statistics, among the total sales of vehicles with a displacement of more than 660 ml, 2,542,837 vehicles were produced in Japan, accounting for about 88.8%; including vehicles produced overseas by Japanese automakers and sold back to Japan, the sales of imported vehicles were 320,789 units, accounting for about 11.2%.
Local media and experts believe that the decline in Japan’s new car sales is partly due to the fact that since the end of 2023, Daihatsu Industries, Toyota Motor, Mazda and other companies have been ordered to stop shipping after being exposed for data falsification in certification tests, which has restricted new car sales on the supply side.
